CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? Senior midfielder Mitchell Rosensweig won 12 of 17 face-offs and had a game-high nine ground balls, but top-ranked Virginia (9-0) used a 7-0 run over the final 44 minutes to defeat the Tigers (1-4) by an 11-2 margin in a non-conference game at rainy Klockner Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After the Tigers narrowed the margin to 4-2 early in the second quarter, the Cavalier defense held Towson without a goal for the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
Led by two goals from Steele Stanwick, the Cavaliers opened up a 4-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the opening period.
With 13:51 remaining in the second quarter, the Tigers ended the drought when junior midfielder Pat Britton scored his second goal of the season, an extra-man tally off an assist from senior Randall Cooper.
Just 29 seconds later, the Tigers took advantage of another extra-man opportunity when senior attackman Bill McCutcheon tallied his team-high ninth goal of the year off a feed from junior midfielder Brock Armour.
However, sophomore midfielder Shamel Bratton scored a pair of unassisted goals in the final six minutes of the period to give the Cavaliers a 6-2 lead at the intermission.
The Cavaliers continued their run in the third quarter with four unassisted goals, upping their advantage to 10-2. Senior midfielder Steve Giannone scored two of Virginia's goals during the spurt.
With 7:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, senior midfielder Danny Glading ended the scoring when he tallied his 12th goal of the season, an unassisted marker past junior goalkeeper Rob Wheeler.
Bratton scored three goals with an assist to lead Virginia in the victory while Stanwick added a three-goal performance.
Wheeler made ten saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, who were outshot by a 27-19 margin.
The Tigers, who have played four of their first five games away from home, will return home to host Robert Morris next Saturday at Unitas Stadium in the second game of a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
