MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Tiger volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on day two of the West Virginia Classic on Saturday. Towson (1-2) fell to West Virignia 3-0 in its first match of the day before dropping a tough 3-2 decision to Oakland in its final match. Senior Missy Rohrbaugh was named to the all-tournament team.
"The results may not have been exactly what we were looking for but I'm happy with the intensity and determination we showed on the court today," said Coach Paul Koncir. "We got another couple of strong performances from the freshmen and Missy did well for us and hopefully we can continue to bulid on this during the upcoming week."
Against West Virginia, the home team took control early with a 25-19 win in set one. The Mountaineers took the second set by a 25-11 score and secured the victory with a 25-23 win in the third set.
Amanda Halls led the Tigers in the match with 5 kills and 11 digs while fellow freshman I'ishah Keliikoa had a team-high seven kills. Katee Luecke had 16 assists and five digs for the Tigers as well.
Kari Post had 36 assists and 10 digs to lead the Mountaineers in the win.
In the match with Oakland, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead taking the first set by a 25-21 score. Towson extended its lead to two with a 26-24 win in set two. The Grizzlies started their comeback in the third set with a 25-22 win. Oakland tied the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set and claimed the victory with a 15-11 win in the fifth set.
Rohrbaugh led the Tigers with a career-high 31 digs while Britney Loomis posted her second "double-double" of the weekend with 16 kills and 11 digs. Halls continued her strong play with nine kills and 14 digs. Evan Schulz had the first "double-double" of her career after finishing with 34 assists and 12 digs. Stacey Niehoff contributed 14 digs off the bench for the Tigers.
Oakland received 23 kills and 11 digs from Adrienne Leone and 13 kills and 21 digs from Meghan Bray.
Towson returns to action on Wednesday, September 2 when it makes its 2009 home debut against Lehigh at 7 p.m.
