American Defeats the Tigers 8-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Anne-Meike DeWiljies had two goals and an assist to lead American past the Tigers 8-1 in the opening game of the Terrapin Classic for both teams. The Tigers (2-3) got three saves from Jamie Dowling in goal.

Towson grabbed the early lead in the game as Kasie Nurko scored her first career goal in the seventh minute. Nurko's goal scored off a scramble in front of the net was assisted by Mariah Schuette.

American got the equalizer in the 12th minute as Kelsey Davis scored on a fast break for her third of the season and was assisted by Allison Baron. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 18th minute as Savannah Graybill scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Melissa Casale.

American held the 2-1 advantage at the half after out shooting the Tigers 12-1. American also held a 7-1 advantage in corners in the first half.

The Eagles continued to add to their lead in the second half. In the 39th minute Anne Van Erp scored her first goal of the season. The Eagles made it a 4-1 game in the 40th minute as Christine Fingerhuth scored her fourth of the season on an assist from Casale.  American scored its fifth goal in the 47th minute as Baron scored off a pass from Van Erp.

In the 56th minute, DeWiljies scored off a pass from Natalie Ellenberger to make it a 6-1 game in favor of the Eagles. DeWiljies scored her second goal of the game in the 61st minute off a penalty corner. Tatum Dyer and Ellenberger assisted on the score.

American struck for its final goal of the game in the 66th minute as Jenn Bradley scored her first goal of the year off an assist from DeWiljies.

American finished the game with a 22-1 advantage in shots. Alyssa Poorman was not forced to make a save as she played the first 55 minutes in goal and earned the victory. Hannah Weitzman played the final 15 minutes in net for the Eagles. In addition to Dowling's three saves, the Tigers also got two saves from Whitney Clugston in goal.

Towson returns to action on Sunday, September 13 against #1 Maryland at 2 p.m. as part of the Terrapin Classic.
