WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Kristie Blumer's goal broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Tigers to a 3-2 win over William & Mary on Friday evening. It was just the Tigers' (5-6, 1-2 CAA) second ever win over the Tribe in 17 tries and Towson's first ever win in Williamsburg.
"I'm extremely pleased to get the win tonight," said Coach Michelle Webber. "The entire team gave a great effort on both ends of the field tonight."
The Tigers came out firing in the game and had eight shots before William & Mary recorded their first one. Towson struck first in the game when it was awarded a corner at 29:19. Janine Kovach inserted the ball and it was stopped by Kim Schnell. Katie DeFilippo was able to fire the ball home for her third goal of the season.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the break as the team held a 12-4 advantage in shots. Towson also had five penalty corners to the Tribe's one. William & Mary made seven saves to the Tigers' one in the first half.
William & Mary got the equalizer at 41:39 as Kelsey Nawalinski scored off an assist from Allison Moran. The Tribe took a 2-1 lead at 46:54 as Mikala Savaides tallied an unassisted goal.
Webber called a timeout to settle the Tigers following the second Tribe goal. The timeout seemed to pay dividends as just three minutes later, the Tigers tied the game. Jamie Salvador took a rebound off a corner and knocked it home for her third goal of the year.
Blumer tallied the game-winner with just less than ten minutes to play in the game. Following her initial shot that was saved, Blumer collected the rebound at the near post and knocked it home for her team-leading fourth goal of the year.
Whitney Clugston needed to make just four saves to earn the win in goal for the Tigers. Elizabeth Frey made 12 saves in goal for the Tribe.
The Tigers finished the game with a 20-17 advantage in shots and an 8-7 edge in penalty corners. William & Mary finished with 12 saves to the Tigers' four.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, October 3 when they visit Old Dominion for a 1 p.m. game. The Lady Monarchs were 6-0 winners over Delaware on Friday.
