HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Tigers earned their first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season with a 3-0 win at Hofstra on Sunday afternoon. Towson (13-12, 1-7 CAA) got eight kills and six blocks from Susan Gansor in the victory.
The Tigers opened up the first set on a 7-3 run behind some strong serves from Stacey Niehoff. A kill by Shelynne Hoyt extended the Towson advantage to 14-9. Kelsey Hoefer had a kill later in the match to give Towson a 19-12 lead in the first set. The Tigers would eventually take the first set by a 25-22 margin.
The second set proved to a tightly contested one as the two squads battled through 13 ties and six lead changes. There were four ties in the set before either side reached 11 points on the scoreboard. Trailing 18-15, the Tigers used a kill by Gansor to start a 4-0 run and take a 19-18 lead. The teams traded points before a Hofstra error and a Tiger block gave Towson the 28-26 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
A couple of service aces by Hoyt early in the third set gave Towson a 14-10 advantage. The Tigers continued to build on their lead as a Britney Loomis kill made it 19-14 in favor of the visitors. The two teams would trade points and end up tied at 24-24 late in the third set. A Hofstra service error followed by an ace from Amanda Halls gave Towson the 26-24 win and the match.
Gansor hit .438 en route to her eight kills while adding one block solo and five block assists. Halls finished just shy of the "double-double" with nine kills and 10 digs. She also contributed two service aces and three block assists. Evan Schulz finished with 32 assists, two service aces and two block assists. Lauren Tonokawa added 11 digs while Hoefer finished with eight kills.
Nikki Kinnier led Hofstra with a match-high 15 kills while Rachel August finished with 31 assists and three service aces. Marina Markovic contributed seven kills and 12 digs.
Towson returns to action when it returns home to host George Mason on Friday, October 29 at 7 p.m.
