TOWSON, Md. - Despite nine kills and a career-high 10 blocks from Susan Gansor, the Tigers dropped a tough 3-2 decision to William & Mary on Friday night. The Tigers (12-9, 0-4 CAA) trailed 2-1 in the match before forcing the fifth set against the Tribe (8-8, 2-2 CAA).
The Tigers jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first set behind a kill from Shelynne Hoyt. Towson extended its lead to 18-11 on a block by Gansor and Kelsey Hoefer. Towson grabbed a 25-20 set win as Hoyt recorded the deciding kill. In the second set, the two teams battled early as Gansor's kill tied the set at 13-13. A couple of kills by Gina Lang gave the Tribe a 16-14 advantage. After Towson tied the set at 17-17, William & Mary would work its way to a 25-18 win.
Following the break, the Tigers opened the third set on a 6-3 run capped by a block from Gansor. A six-point run behind the service game of Celine Alasomuka gave William & Mary a 12-10 lead. Trailing 24-19, the Tigers pulled to within two at 24-22. The Tribe would hold off the Tigers for a 25-22 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. A service ace from Evan Schulz gave the Tigers a 12-9 early lead in the fourth set. A block from Gansor and Amanda Halls later in the match, gave Towson an 18-11 lead. Towson would capture the fourth set, 25-21 and send the match to a fifth and final set.
In the fifth set with the score tied at 3-3, William & Mary went on a 5-0 run to take an 8-3 lead. Following a kill from Gansor to make it 8-4, William & Mary closed the set on a 7-0 run to take the set 15-4 and the match.
Gansor finished the match with 15.5 points for the Tigers. She had nine kills, hit .269 with three solo blocks and seven block assists. Schulz posted her third "double-double" of the season while contributing 45 assists, 12 digs, two service aces and three block assists. Halls just missed her sixth straight "double-double" as she had 11 kills and eight digs. Lauren Tonokawa led the Tigers with 22 digs while Stacey Niehoff and Katy Buck had 13 digs apiece.
Ginny Bray led William & Mary with 16 kills and eight block assists while Lang contributed 15 kills, eight digs and four block assists. Cassie Crumal had a "double-double" with 45 assists and 13 digs. Alasomuka finished with 31 digs and three service aces.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, October 10 when they host VCU at 1 p.m.
