Pride Rallies To Beat Tigers, 74-62

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Towson opened its Colonial Athletic Association schedule on the road at Hofstra where the Tigers (2-4, 0-1) couldn't contain the league's leading scorer and bowed to the Pride (4-3, 1-0) 74-62 Saturday afternoon.

Senior Charles Jenkins, hoping to repeat as the CAA Player of the Year by the end of the 2010-11 campaign, scored 21 of his game high 26 points in a second half comeback.

The game was slow developing  because of sloppy play. There were six lead changes and four ties before the Tigers went on an 8-0 run for their biggest lead of the game, 30-23, at the 4:08 mark. The Pride countered with a 6-0 run but two Isaiah Philmore free throws and a buzzer beating tip in by Braxton Dupree put the Tigers on top 34-29 at the break.

Hofstra  got off to a faster start at the outset of the second half. Jenkins, the CAA's leading scorer with a (21.7 ppg), tallied five quick points on a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to tie the game at 34-34.

From there Towson kept the Pride at bay until two Jenkins' free throws moved the Pride ahead, 48-46 at the 11:44 mark. The Tigers could not regain the lead but did tie the game twice, at 52-52 and at 57-57 before a 14-1 Hofstra run put it out of reach for the Tigers.

"College basketball is a game of spurts," said Tiger head coach Pat Kennedy. "They made the run at the key time. Once we got behind we didn't execute that well. The foul line hurt us, we missed nine. Then we had 15 turnovers, they had six. You can't give someone the ball nine more times and expect to win."

Philmore and RaShawn Polk shared scoring honors for the Tigers with 15 points each. Troy Franklin added 12 points. Dupree was held to five points but collected a game high 11 rebounds.

Towson is back on the court again this Wednesday when the Tigers travel to George Washington for a 7:00 p.m. encounter with the Colonials.
