Schweitzer Wins Two Events In Tigers' Narrow Loss To GW

WASHINGTON, D.C.  - Senior Jackie Schweitzer took first place on the uneven bars and the balance beam to lead the Tigers (18-4) to its fourth consecutive 193.000-score but it wasn't enough as George Washington University edged the Tigers in a dual meet at the Smith Center on Wednesday night.

The Colonials, who avenged a loss at Towson last month, edged the Tigers by 0.525 points. George Washington won the meet with a 193.650 team score, nipping the Tigers who had a 193.125 team score.

Competing in two events, Schweitzer finished first on bars with a 9.75 score and won the balance beam competition with a 9.80 score.

The teams competed on virtually even terms until balance beam. The Colonials had a 48.525 team score on beam while Towson had a 47.95 score.

Junior Megan Wooden and senior Alise McDonald led the Tigers on vault. Towson had a 48.525 team score as Wooden and McDonald tied for first place with 9.75 scores. Sophomore Avis Hixon finished fourth with a 9.725 score.

On bars, Schweitzer led the Tigers to a 47.900 team score as she took first place with a 9.75. Hixon tied for third place with a career high 9.65 score.

While Schweitzer finished first on balance beam, sophomore Lindsay Poplaski of Towson was part of a three-way tie for second place. She earned a 9.775 score on beam. However, the Tigers had two costly falls on balance beam.

On floor exercise, Megan Quinn and Leslie Delima of GW tied for first place with 9.85 scores. McDonald finished third with a 9.825 while Hixon took fourth place with a 9.775 score.

In the all-around competition, Delima finished first with a 38.925 score while Quinn was second (38.75). McDonald placed third in the all-around with a 38.725 score.

The Tigers will close out the regular season on Saturday night in the Towson Center against Brown University and Southern Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.

The meet will be the final home meet for Coach Dick Filbert, who is retiring after 28 seasons as the Tigers' coach.

It will also be the final home meet for McDonald and Schweitzer, the Tigers' two seniors.
