Wertz Leads Tigers Past ODU, 4-3

NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Kurt Wertz went two-for-three and drove in three runs as the Tigers (14-28, 8-10) earned their third win in the last four games with a 4-3 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion University (17-27, 5-10) at the Bud Metheny Complex on Sunday afternoon.

After dropping a 9-1 decision in the series opener on Friday night, the Tigers used a pair of one-run victories to claim the weekend series. Towson edged Old Dominion by 6-5 in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon before Sunday's 4-3 victory.

The Monarchs took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by senior Chris Buss and sophomore Josh Wright.

But, the Tigers responded with four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead. Wertz cut the Towson deficit to 2-1 with his third home run of the season, a solo blast to center field.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers tied the game when junior Nick Natoli singled through the left side to score freshman Andrew Parker.

The Tigers took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning when Wertz hit a two-run single to right field, scoring junior Austin Harclerode and junior Steve Rice.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Monarchs trimmed the deficit to 4-3 when junior Nathan Hartman doubled down the right field line to score Wright from second base.

The Monarchs had two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, but seniors Wes Shifflett and Nate Curd struck out back-to-back batters to close out the game.

While Wertz led the Tigers with two hits and three runs batted in, freshman Michael Trionfo pitched five innings to earn his second win of the season. He allowed two unearned runs on eight hits while striking out three ODU batters with no walks.

Curd, who earned his first save of the season, also became the Tigers' all-time leader by pitching in his 73rd career game. He surpassed the record set by Jon Dupski, '08, who appeared in 72 career games.

Senior Jake McAloose led the Monarchs by going three-for-five while Wright had two hits and drove in a run. Sophomore Ben Tomchick earned the loss for Old Dominion after allowing four runs on eight hits. He pitched 6.0 innings and struck out three Tigers with three walks.

The Tigers will wrap up a nine-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Delaware State for a 3 p.m. game against the Hornets. Meanwhile, the Monarchs will travel to Northeastern on Friday afternoon to begin a three-game CAA series against the Huskies.
