Former Tigers Help Mariners Win AIFA Title

BALTIMORE, Md. - When the Baltimore Mariners came from behind to beat the Wyoming Cavalry for the American Indoor Football Association championship on Sunday afternoon in the First Mariner Arena, three former Tiger football players played key roles in their 57-42 victory.

Former All-American linebacker Brian Bradford, '08, former offensive center Konstantinos "Gus" Kosmakos, '06, and former offensive lineman Jeff Tyler, '08 contributed to the Mariners' win which enabled them to finish the season with a perfect 15-0 record.

Wearing his familiar #41, Bradford did a solid job as a two-way performer for the Mariners. He played linebacker on defense and applied plenty of pressure on Wyoming quarterback Henry Strand. On offense, he played running back and was a key blocker on several running plays.

As a senior at Towson in 2007, Bradford was named as a first team All-America linebacker as he finished second in the nation with 149 tackles in 11 games.

Kosmakos played the entire game at offensive center and was perfect on his center snaps as the Mariners ran a shotgun formation for the entire game. He also teamed up with Tyler as two-thirds of the offensive line that enabled Baltimore quarterback E.J. Nemeth to complete 21 of 30 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

In the AIFA, each team has eight players on the field and uses only three offensive linemen. Kosmakos and Tyler were vital to the Mariners' success.

Currently a member of the Tigers' coaching staff, Kosmakos was a four-year standout on the offensive line for the Tigers from 2002 to 2005. As a senior, he was named as the Tigers' Offensive Player of the Year.

A three-year starter on the Tigers' offensive line, Tyler was honored as the Tigers' Lineman of the Year in 2007.

In AIFA Bowl IV, Wyoming stunned the Mariners by grabbing a 16-0 lead midway through the first quarter. However, the Mariners regrouped and trailed by just 24-17 at halftime.

The second half belonged to the Mariners. They scored on the opening possession of the second half and outscored Wyoming by 40-18 after halftime. However, the Mariners did not seal the win until the final minute of the game. A two-yard TD run by Isaiah Greer gave the Mariners a 50-42 lead with 3:55 left in the game.

On Wyoming's next possession, Richard Johnson intercepted a pass near the Baltimore goal line to halt a Wyoming drive. Then, Nemeth fired a 26-yard TD pass to Scorpio Brown with 26 seconds remaining to increase the lead to 57-42.

Moments later, an interception by Armar Watson touched off the celebration as the Mariners won their first AIFA championship.

Quarterbacks Coach Ron Meehan, '81, a member of the Towson Hall of Fame, also contributed to the Mariners' perfect season. Meehan was the Tigers' starting quarterback from 1977 to 1980 and graduated with most of the school records for passing yardage.
