VCU Slips by Tigers, 2-0

TOWSON, Md. - A pair of second-half goals by Kelsey Scherrer lifted Virginia Commonwealth past the Tigers, 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play. Towson (4-6, 0-2 CAA) got four saves from Whitney Clugston in the game.

"We had some defensive breakdowns in the second half that cost us," said Coach Michelle Webber. "I thought we came out with some good energy but unfortunately we couldn't maintain it today."

The Tigers came out and forced the ball into the offensive end early in the game. Towson outshot the Rams, 7-2 in the first half. The Tigers forced VCU goalie, Erin Jablonski to make four saves in the first 35 minutes of action. VCU held a 3-1 edge in penalty corners at the break.

Scherrer broke the scoreless tie just into the second half. She scored an unassisted goal at 38:58 to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

Scherrer would extend VCU's lead to 2-0 at 58:32 of the second half. Her second goal of the game and sixth of the season was assisted by Rachel Whitt.

The Tigers had a couple of opportunities in the final five minutes as Katie DeFilippo and Tabi Hatch both got off shots on goal but Jablonski was able to make the saves and preserve the shutout.

Jablonski finished with six saves while earning the victory in goal. Clugston, allowed two goals and made four saves while taking the lose for the Tigers.

Towson finished the game with an 11-8 edge in shots while VCU held a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners.

The Tigers return to action when they hit the road to visit William & Mary. The Tribe and Tigers will face off against each other on Friday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
