HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - A season-high 12 team blocks led the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Hofstra on Friday evening. The Tigers (15-4, 2-0 CAA) won their third straight match as senior Susan Gansor had seven blocks against the Pride.
In the first set, Towson held a 17-14 lead before the Pride (10-8, 1-1 CAA) battled back to tie the set at 18-18. The Tigers would go back on top 20-18 only to see Hofstra tie the set at 22-22. A pair of blocks would give Hofstra a 25-22 set victory and the early lead in the match.
The Tigers would open up a 10-5 lead in the second set behind a kill from junior Karolina Sawaniewicz. Towson extended its lead to 17-12 following a kill from sophomore Katy Buck. Hofstra tied the set at 19-19 before the Tigers were able to take advantage of a couple Pride errors and take the set 25-20. The Tigers needed to battle through eight ties and five lead changes before claiming a 27-25 win in the third set. Towson took a 2-1 lead in the match with the third set victory.
In the fourth set, the Tigers and Pride battled through four ties early and found themselves tied at 9-9. A pair of blocks by Gansor and junior Alysha McCreary gave Towson a 13-9 lead. Towson maintained the lead and claimed a 25-20 win in the set and victory in the match.
Buck led the Tigers with 19 kills and seven digs in the match. Gansor added nine kills to go along with her blocks. Sawaniewicz and McCreary each finished with seven kills and five blocks. Junior Aubrey Kirven posted 37 assists, five kills and six digs while freshman Paige Sekerak had 15 digs and six assists.
Kelsie Wills led all players with 24 kills and 12 digs while Catalina Charry had 52 assists and seven digs. Nikki Kinnier added 12 kills and 11 digs for the Pride.
Towson is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 2 when the Tigers visit Northeastern for a 1 p.m. match. The Huskies dropped a 3-0 decision to Delaware on Friday evening.
