Tigers Fall to Bucknell 3-2 in OT

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Bucknell's Mallory Smith scored in overtime to give the Bison a 3-2 victory over the Towson University field hockey team on Sunday afternoon in College Park, Md. The Tigers (8-7) got a pair of goals from Janine Kovach in the loss.

Bucknell (5-9) got on the board first with a goal just 45 seconds into the game. Rachel Misko took a ball from the near post and tucked it home for the goal.

That Bison goal was the only one on the scoreboard after 35 minutes of play. Both teams took five shots in the first half while Towson had a slight 3-2 edge in penalty corners.

Towson got the equalizer at 59:35 as Kovach scored off a scramble in front of the net. It was the junior's second goal of the season.

Bucknell went back on top 2-1 just 15 seconds later as Katie Durkin tipped a ball home in front of the goal.

Towson continued to pressure the Bucknell goalie and in the 67th minute tied the game at 2-2. Kovach collected the ball off a rebound from junior Kasie Nurko's initial shot and punched it home. It was Kovach's second goal of the game and third of the season.

Both teams continued to pressure but neither could find the back of the net and the Tigers were faced with their second overtime game of the weekend.

In overtime, Bucknell was awarded a penalty corner and Towson made the initial save but Smith was able to collect the rebound and hit it home to give the Bison the win.

Bucknell finished the game with 16-13 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.

Erica Perrine made nine saves in goal to earn the win for the Bison. Christina Siwiec made four stops in goal for the Tigers.

Towson returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when the Tigers visit Maryland for a 7 p.m. game in College Park.
