Tigers Fall To Delaware State, 6-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior righthander  Jordan Elliot of Delaware State held the Tigers (2-3) to one unearned run on six singles as he pitched the Hornets (1-3) to a 6-1 victory over the Tigers on the opening day of the Wake Forest Invitational Tournament at Wake Forest Park on Friday afternoon.

While pitching the first complete game of his college career, Elliot did not walk any batters and struck out three. During one stretch, he retired ten batters in a row. He also received some help from the Hornets' infield as Delaware State turned a pair of double plays.

The Hornets gave Elliott a 1-0 lead in the third inning when catcher Cameron Cecil doubled with one out and scored on a double by shortstop Keith Hernandez.

In the last of the third inning, the Tigers staged their best scoring threat of the game. With two outs, freshman second baseman Pat Fitzgerald and senior shortstop Nick Natoli hit back-to-back singles. However, Elliot retired freshman Brandon Gonella on a fly ball to rightfield, ending the threat.

The Hornets added an unearned run in the fourth inning when first baseman Trey Derouen reached on an error by Gonella in left field and scored on a double by leftfielder Aaron Nardone.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Hornets rallied and knocked Tiger righthander Michael Trionfo out of the game. Third baseman Brandon Crist opened the inning with a single to centerfield. When Hernandez was hit by a pitch, the Hornets had two runners on base. A sacrifice bunt by Troy Drummond moved both runners into scoring position.

It seemed like the Tigers would escape the jam when second baseman Scott Davis hit a ground ball to Natoli at shortstop. Natoli made a nice play and threw to home plate where he retired Crist trying to score. When Trionfo walked Ryan Haas, the Hornets had the bases loaded.

But Derouen followed with a two-run single to rightfield, giving the Hornets a 4-0 lead and knocking Trionfo out of the game. Senior righthander Spencer Patton came in to relieve him and pitched out of the inning by getting Tony Gatto to ground out to shortstop.

The Tigers scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, first baseman Austin Harclerode reached on a three-base error by Gatto, the rightfielder. He scored on a bunt single by Fitzgerald, cutting the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior third baseman Chris Wychock singled with one out. However, Elliot retired the next two hitters and did not allow a base hit the rest of the game.

The Hornets threatened to break the game open in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with one out. A single by Nardone drove in a run but Patton struck out Cecil to end the inning.

After Patton walked Crist and gave up a bunt single to Hernandez in the eighth inning, he was relieved by freshman righthander Troy Bennett. With one out, a single by Davis plated Crist to make it a 6-1 lead. However, Bennett pitched out of the jam when he got Derouen to ground into a double play.

Meanwhile, Ellliot retired the Tigers in order in the seventh and eighth innings. After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning, he hit sophomore catcher Andrew Parker with a pitch, giving the Tigers their first baserunner since the sixth inning. But, Elliot closed out the win by getting Steve Rice to ground out to second base.

Led by Derouen and Nardone, who had two hits each, the Hornets out-hit the Tigers, 12-6.

Fitzpatrick, Natoli and Wychock accounted for all six of the Tigers' hits. They had two base hits each.

Trionfo fell to 0-1 on the season after allowing three earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. He walked two and had two strikeouts. Bennett pitched very well in relief. In two scoreless innings, he gave up one hit.

The victory was Delaware State's first win over Towson since March 14, 2007. The Tigers had beaten the Hornets five times in a row.

The Tigers resume play in the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday afternoon when they face Minnesota at 2:00 p.m.
