Tigers Turn Triple Play In 8-3 Loss To Marist

TOWSON, Md. - Despite pulling off only the second triple play in school history, the Tigers (4-10-1) couldn't hold a 3-1 sixth inning lead and dropped an 8-3 non-conference decision to Marist College (10-3) at John B. Schuerholz Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore shortstop Zach Shank capped off a five-run rally in the seventh inning by blasting a three-run homer down the left field line to lift Marist to the win.

The teams had entered the seventh inning in a 3-3 tie before Marist rallied to win its seventh game in a row.

With one out in the top of the seventh inning, sophomore first baseman Mike Orefice reached base on an error by Tiger first baseman Austin Harclerode, his first error of the season. Senior rightfielder Steve Rice recorded the second out of the inning when he made a fine running catch on a foul ball hit by junior third baseman Jon Schwind. Senior leftfielder Ricky Pacione lined a single to rightfield to send Orefice to third base. Then, senior centerfielder Michael Gallic scorched a double down the left field line, scoring two runs to give the Red Foxes a 5-3 lead.

When Tiger righthander Spencer Patton hit senior catcher Bryce Nugent with a pitch, he was relieved by freshman righthander Troy Bennett. Shank greeted Bennett with a line drive homer down the left field line to give Marist an 8-3 advantage. It was Shank's first home run of the season.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Red Foxes threatened to add to their lead against freshman righthander Chris Acker. Schwind led off with a walk and Pacione singled. With the base runners moving, Gallic hit a soft line drive back to Acker. He caught the ball and threw to freshman shortstop Hunter Bennett for the second out. Bennett's relay to first base retired the side.

It was only the second triple play in school history and the first since April 2, 1986 when the Tigers recorded a triple play at Liberty.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, freshman leftfielder Dominic Fratantuono singled to rightfield. A walk to Hunter Bennett gave the Tigers two runners on base before junior catcher Brian Wyman's single to leftfield loaded the bases.

When freshman second baseman Pat Fitzgerald grounded into a force play, Fratantuono scored to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. With Fitzgerald at first base and Hunter Bennett at third, the two freshmen pulled off a double steal as Hunter Bennett scored to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, sophomore rightfielder Dan Zlotnick led off with a single. After freshman righthander Brandon Gonnella struck out freshman second baseman Nick McQuail, Orefice grounded back to the mound as Zlotnick moved to second base. When Schwind lined a single to leftfield, Zlotnick scored to make it a 2-1 game. A walk to Pacione put runners on first and second base. When Gallic was hit by a pitch, the Red Foxes had the bases loaded. However, Nugent was retired on a fly ball to end the threat.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Tigers added to their 2-1 advantage. With one out, senior third baseman Chris Wychock doubled to left centerfield. After sophomore catcher Andrew Parker grounded out, Harclerode doubled to right centerfield, upping the lead to 3-1. However, the rally came to an end when Rice popped up to third base.

Gonnella allowed only one run on two hits in four innings of work. He was relieved by Patton in the fifth inning. After retiring Marist in the fifth inning, Patton ran into trouble in the sixth.

Pacione opened the inning with a single to rightfield. Gallic followed with an infield single to shortstop. When Hunter Bennett made a throwing error, Pacione advanced to third base and Gallic reached second base. After Nugent walked, the Red Foxes had the bases loaded.

Patton appeared to have escaped the jam with minimal damage as he got Shank to ground into a double play while Pacione scored to make it 3-2. However, junior designated hitter Eric Helmrich lined an RBI single to left, scoring Gallic with the tying run.

After the Tigers scored three runs on four hits in three innings against sophomore righthander Chris Bielak, the Red Foxes' starting pitcher, they were shut down by the Marist bullpen.

Senior lefthander Sean McKeown earned his third win of the season by pitching four shutout innings, allowing only three hits with no walks and a strikeout. Junior righthander Jake Rifkin pitched a scoreless eighth inning and senior righthander Eric Alessio threw a perfect ninth inning.

Marist outhit Towson by a 9-8 margin as Pacione banged out three hits and scored two runs. Gallic added two hits and drove in two runs.

Harclerode, Fratantuono and Wyman led the Tigers with two hits each.

The Tigers, who are winless in their five games, return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Marist in the second game of their two-game series at 2:30 p.m.
