BALTIMORE, Md. - During half-time of the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship Game between Adelphi and Mercyhurst, the 1974 Towson State men's lacrosse team was honored on the field for winning the first NCAA Division II men's lacrosse title.
The Tigers, who posted a 14-1 record, defeated Hobart in overtime by an 18-17 margin to capture the Division II championship. In three games during the Division II playoffs, the Tigers outscored their opponents by a 62-27 margin and scored 22 goals in each of their first two wins over Baltimore and Adelphi.
After opening the season with a six-game win streak, the Tigers suffered their only loss on April 27 against Washington & Lee, a 19-17 setback. However, the Tigers rebounded to win their final eight games, including an 18-14 victory over fourth-ranked Virginia on May 4.
Mercyhurst used four goals from junior midfielder Ian Wild to edge Adelphi, 9-8, in Sunday's championship game at M&T Bank Stadium.
