MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Towson University volleyball team posted a pair of victories on Sunday at the West Virginia Mountaineer Invitational. The Tigers (3-1) earned a 3-1 victory over West Virginia before closing out the tournament with a 3-0 win against Robert Morris.
Katy Buck and Dayane Van Ass represented Towson on the All-Tournament team.
The first set against West Virginia (3-1) proved to be a tight battle as the two teams played through nine ties and five lead changes before the Tigers claimed a 25-22 victory. The Mountaineers hit .393 in the second set en route to a 25-12 victory which tied the match at 1-1. The third set was another closely contested one as there were 19 ties in the set. A late kill by I'ishah Keliikoa allowed the Tigers to claim the 25-23 victory. Towson held West Virginia to a .054 hitting percentage in the fourth set and used a 25-20 win to claim victory in the match.
Aubrey Kirven posted her second "double-double" of the season to lead the Tigers. Kirven finished with 42 assists, 12 digs and four kills. Buck had 17 kills and eight digs while Marta Machos contributed 11 kills. Paige Sekerak posted 25 digs, six assists and three service aces. Stacey Niehoff added 10 digs for the Tigers off the bench.
Kylie Armbruster led West Virginia with 14 kills and 10 digs in the match while Kari Post had 34 assists and 10 digs.
The Tigers had their best hitting match of the weekend against Robert Morris (0-2) with a .349 percentage. Towson hit .242 in the first set and held the Colonials to a .061 percentage. The Tigers claimed a 25-15 victory in the set and an early lead in the match. The second set was the closest of the match as there were eight ties and three lead changes. The Tigers claimed the 25-20 victory. Towson hit .619 in the third set en route to a 25-6 set victory and the 3-0 match victory.
Van Ass led the Tigers with 13 kills while hitting .478 in the match. Kirven added 34 assists and four digs while Evan Schulz contributed 10 digs.
Hannah Hoffman led Robert Morris with 21 assists while Hannah Veith contributed seven kills.
Towson returns to action on Tuesday, August 30 when the Tigers travel to La Salle for a 7 p.m. match.
