BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman forward Sofia Read scored a goal and an assist as the Tigers (3-2-0) used a pair of second half goals to break a 1-1 tie en route to earning a 3-2 non-conference victory over UMBC (0-6-0) at the Retriever Soccer Park on Friday evening.
With the win, the Tigers have now defeated the Retrievers five straight times and lead the all-time series by an 8-6-0 margin.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when junior forward Cheyenne Skidmore took a crossing pass from sophomore Alex Evitts and scored her third goal of the season.
But, the Retrievers answered just under nine minutes later when sophomore Amy Savage took a pass from freshman Lilly Rydon and scored her second goal of the season. Junior defender Aly Gazarek also earned an assist on the play after sending a crossing pass to Rydon.
With 34:00 remaining in the second half, sophomore forward Emily Banes gave Towson a 2-1 advantage when she scored off a corner kick from Read.
Read upped the Tigers' cushion to 3-1 with 18:55 left when she scored on a free kick from the top right corner of the box.
While Read led the Tigers with a goal and an assist, Banes scored for the third straight game. Senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak made four saves for the Tigers, who outshot UMBC by a 19-11 margin.
UMBC goalkeeper Mo Van Vlerah tallied seven saves, including four in the second half.
The Tigers will return home on Sunday afternoon when they host Mount St. Mary's in the first game of a doubleheader at the Tiger Soccer Complex at 1 p.m. The Mountaineers dropped a 1-0 decision against Howard on Friday night.
