Nolan's OT Goal Gives Tigers 2-1 Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior Kate Nolan tallied an overtime goal to give the Towson University field hockey team a 2-1 victory over La Salle on Friday afternoon. The Tigers won their third straight contest and improved to 3-3 on the year.

"I thought the girls really worked hard today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "They battled throughout the game and we were able to get a couple of goals when we needed them."

The Tigers found themselves down early in the contest as La Salle scored in the 8th minute of the game. Janel Paukovits was able to deflect Becca Chylack's shot into the back of the net.

The Explorers (2-5) maintained their 1-0 advantage until the 31st minute when Towson was awarded a penalty stroke. Senior Kim Schnell connected on the stroke as her fourth goal of the season tied the game at 1-1. It was the first penalty stroke goal for the Tigers since the 2009 season, when now assistant coach Angie Brewer scored two strokes.

Towson and La Salle went into the half tied at 1-1 with the Tigers holding a 9-6 advantage in shots. The Explorers held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners in the first 35 minutes.

The Tigers and Explorers battled hard in the second half but neither team was able to take advantage of their opportunities. Towson again held a 9-6 advantage in shots but La Salle got a defensive save from Jessica Deaner and several key stops from goalie Lisa Shaffer.

In overtime, the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner which led to the game-winning goal. Senior Jamie Salvador was awarded the assist as Nolan was able to deflect Salvador's shot into the back of the net.

Christina Siwiec finished with six saves for her third straight victory in goal. Shaffer made nine saves in the loss for the Explorers.

Towson finished the game with a 19-13 lead in the shots category while La Salle had an 11-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Tigers put their three game win streak to the test on Sunday, September 18 when they travel to face Georgetown. The game will be played on American's campus starting at 11 a.m.
