TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team used 11.5 team blocks to record a 3-0 victory over Hofstra in Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday night. The Tigers (20-3, 7-0 CAA) won their 13th straight match with the victory and remained unbeaten in CAA play.
The Tigers reached the 20 win plateau for the second straight season and seventh time in the last 11 years.
“I'm pleased with the performance tonight,” said Towson coach Bruce Atkinson. “I thought our blocking game which is something we have struggled with throughout the year really came through well tonight.”
The two squads battled early in the first set and found themselves tied at 9-9 on a Tiger attack error. A kill from junior Katy Buck gave the home team a 13-10 advantage. The Tigers increased their lead to 17-11 on a kill from senior I'ishah Keliikoa. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 first set win.
Six straight points with sophomore Paige Sekerak serving allowed the Tigers to open up a 10-5 lead in the second set. Hofstra (14-12, 2-5 CAA) pulled to within three, 15-12 on a block from Kelsie Wills and Sarah Campolina. Towson extended its lead to 22-14 on a kill from senior Alysha McCreary. The Tigers secured a 25-17 win in the second set on a kill from Keliikoa.
Tied at 7-7 in the third set, the Tigers recorded three straight points capped off by a block from McCreary and senior Aubrey Kirven for a 10-7 edge. The Tigers held a 14-10 lead following a service error by the Pride. Senior Stacey Niehoff then held serve for six straight points to give the Tigers a 20-11 lead in the set. Niehoff had a pair of service aces during that stretch. Hofstra broke up the Tiger run with a kill from Wills. However, a service error by the Pride gave Towson the serve back. Sekerak held serve as the Tigers recorded the final four points for a 25-11 win and a 3-0 victory in the match.
Buck led the Tigers with 10 kills while hitting .444 in the match. She recorded four digs and five block assists for the Tigers as well. Kirven had 21 assists, five digs and two block assists while McCreary had seven kills, hit .455 and recorded a team-high seven block assists. Sekerak led all players with 11 digs.
Wills led Hofstra with nine kills and three digs while Catalina Charry had 18 assists and four digs.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 21 when they host Northeastern at 1 p.m. It will be a battle for first place in the CAA standings. Northeastern fell 3-2 at Delaware on Friday night and sits one game behind the Tigers at 6-1 in the CAA standings.
