ARLINGTON, Va. – Junior righthander J.P. Wauford shut out the road-weary Tigers (13-15) on one hit through seven innings as he led George Washington University (11-17) to a 9-1 non-conference victory at Barcroft Park on Tuesday afternoon.

For the Tigers, it was their tenth consecutive road game since March 21. They return home on Friday afternoon.

Wauford, who earned his second win of the season against the Tigers, gave up only a one-out double to freshman shortstop Ryne Willard in the second inning. Wauford pitched out of the jam when freshman centerfielder Richie Blosser grounded out to third and sophomore third baseman Mike Draper grounded out to second base.

The Colonials broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when centerfielder Ryan Hickey led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by second baseman Justin Albright. Sophomore lefthander Kyle Paul, the Tigers' starting pitcher, escaped the inning by striking out leftfielder Stephen Oswald and retiring third baseman Brett Bowers on a ground ball to second base.

Freshman righthander Paul Beers replaced Paul in the fourth inning and shut out the Colonials on just one hit through the sixth inning.

Wauford ran into control problems and in the sixth inning as he helped the Tigers load the bases. With one out, he walked sophomore leftfielder Kurt Wertz on a 3-2 pitch. After Wauford retired Brandon Gonnella on a fly ball to right, he hit junior catcher Andrew Parker with a pitch. When he walked junior first baseman Kurtis Voytell, the Tigers had the bases loaded with two outs. But, Wauford pitched out of the jam when he retired Willard on a fly ball to left.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Colonials broke the game open by scoring eight runs. Rightfielder Owen Beightol led off with a single and catcher Jimmy Best sent him to third base when he doubled. Pinch hitter Kyle Gelling delivered an RBI single to right, driving in Beightol for a 2-0 advantage. After Hickey grounded out to third base, shortstop Matthew Murakami was issued an intentional walk to load the bases.

The strategy looked like it would pay off when Albright was retired on a fly ball to right. However, Oswald doubled to left center, scoring Gelling and Best to give GW a 4-0 advantage.

With runners on second and third and two outs, freshman righthander Nick Cioffi was summoned to relieve Beers. A two-run double by Bowers drove in two more runs as the Colonials opened up a 6-0 lead. First baseman Derek Brown reached base on an infield single, putting runners at first and third.

Batting for the second time in the inning, Beightol singled to centerfield, driving in another run. When Best followed with his second double of the inning, two more runs scored to up the advantage to 9-0. Cioffi finally retired the side when Gelling grounded out to shortstop.

After pitching seven shutout innings, Wauford was relieved by sophomore lefthander Colin Milon, who retired the side in order in the eighth inning.

Senior righthander Luke Mirabella came on to pitch the ninth inning for the Colonials as the Tigers broke through to score a run.

With one out, Voytell doubled to left center field.  Willard followed with an infield single as Voytell advanced to third base. Willard broke up the shutout with an infield hit that drove in Voytell, cutting the lead to 9-1.

However, Mirabella retired Draper on a ground ball to shortstop and Hunter Bennett popped up to end the game.

Led by Beightol, who had three hits, the Colonials out the Tigers, 13-4. Bowers added two hits and drove in a pair of runs while Best had two doubles and two RBI's.

Wauford earned the win by allowing one hit in seven shutout innings. He walked three and struck out four. Milon pitched a perfect eighth inning.

Willard led the Tigers with two hits while Voytell and Blosser accounted for the Tigers' other two hits.

Paul took the loss for the Tigers as he allowed one run on four hits in three innings of work. He walked one and struck out two. Beers allowed five runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of relief while Cioffi surrendered three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

The loss to George Washington closed out a ten-game road trip for the Tigers, who have lost their last three games in a row.

The Tigers return to action this weekend when they host Old Dominion University in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Schuerholz Park. The Tigers and ODU open the series on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
