Sacred Heart Defeats @Towson_FH, 3-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University used a strong second half to defeat the Towson University field hockey team 3-1 on Friday afternoon in the season opener for both squads. Sophomore forward Courtney Branco scored the Tigers' (0-1) goal in the game.

The two teams battled early in the first half as neither was able to find the back of the net until the 27th minute of play. Freshman forward Heather Jenney passed the ball from the top of the circle to Branco on the left post. Branco slipped a ball past Pioneers' goalkeeper Mary Altepeter to give the visitors an early advantage.

Sacred Heart (1-0) out shot the Tigers 5-2 in the first half and had two of the three penalty corners.

The Pioneers tied the game in the 40th minute as Kate Boyd beat Tigers' sophomore goalkeeper Tashani Dickson to the left post. Boyd would give the home team a 2-1 advantage at 51:07 with her second goal of the game.

Sacred Heart made it a 3-1 game at 58:21 when Liz Bergman scored an unassisted goal.

Altepeter was not forced to make a save to record the win in goal. Dickson made six saves, all in the second half, while making her first career start for the Tigers.

Sacred Heart finished the game with a 17-4 advantage in shots taken as the Pioneers were awarded six of the game's nine penalty corners.

The Tigers continue their road trip on Sunday, August 26 when they travel to Quinnipiac. The Tigers and Bobcats are scheduled for a noon start in Hamden, Conn.
