TOWSON, Md. - Behind goals from juniors Emily Banes and Alex Evitts and sophomore Sofia Read, the Towson University women's soccer team (1-9-1, 1-2 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)) downed the visiting Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion (2-8, 0-2 CAA), 3-1, for their first win of the season Friday evening at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

"This is a good win," said head coach Greg Paynter. "I'm really pleased with the way the team played. We controlled possession and made good, smart passes."

The Tigers spent most of the contest on Old Dominion's side of the field. Towson's midfield and defense posted a solid effort, winning balls in the air and intercepting passes. Read scored her first goal of the season when she took a pass from senior Cheyenne Skidmore on the left side of the box and her shot ricocheted in off the bottom of the crossbar at 35:17. Towson tallied another goal in the 44th minute when Evitts received a pass from junior Katie Holtzapple and beat ODU's Laura Bush to the middle. The Tigers went into the half up 2-0.

Towson continued to maintain possession in the second half, taking eight shots. The Tigers won a corner in the 77th minute and capitalized after Holtzapple's cross found Banes, who scored at 76:39. The Lady Monarchs got on the board late after Amber Cook collected her own rebound and slid a shot past a diving Erin Quinn at 89:33.

Towson held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Quinn made eight saves to Bush's six.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 when they host the Tribe of William & Mary at 1 p.m.
