BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Lindsay Flaherty hit .818 for the match but it was not enough as Northeastern University claimed a 3-0 victory over the Towson University volleyball team on Friday evening.
The first set saw eight ties and four lead changes between the Tigers and Huskies. Towson took an early 7-5 lead on a kill from junior Victoria Williams. The two sides traded points and found themselves knotted at 11-11 on a block by junior Saitaua Iosia and Flaherty. The two teams were tied at 16-16, before a 6-2 run gave the home team a 22-18 advantage. Towson scored five of the next six points to tie the set at 23-23. Kills from Jamie Bredahl and Kelly Bacon gave Northeastern the 25-23 set victory.
Northeastern (13-7, 5-1 CAA) took advantage of an error by the Tigers to take an 8-4 lead in the second set. Towson used an 8-3 run to take a 12-11 advantage in the set. Flaherty had a pair of block assists and a kill for the Tigers during that stretch. The two teams continued to battle and were tied at 16-16 following a service error by Northeastern. The Huskies closed out the set by scoring nine of the final 13 points to claim a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in the contest. Ava Cramp had a pair of kills during the run by the Huskies.
The third set was by far the most tightly contested of the match. The two teams battled through 10 ties and five lead changes and needed extra points to decide the action. Towson trailed 21-16 in the set following a kill from Janelle Tucker. The Tigers used an 8-1 run to turn a five-point deficit into a two point advantage, 24-22. Williams had a pair of kills and a block assist for the Tigers during that stretch. The two teams traded points and were tied at 26-26. An attack error by Northeastern put the Tigers up 27-26. However, that was the last point the Tigers were able to record in the match. A pair of kills from Bredahl and Bacon gave Northeastern a 29-27 set win and victory in the match.
Flaherty had a strong hitting night for the Tigers and finished with nine kills and no errors in 11 attack attempts. She also added a match-high six blocks, two assists and two digs. Williams added nine kills and four blocks while junior Casey Giovanazzi had a team-high 15 assists. Junior Paige Sekerak contributed 13 digs and six assists.
Bredahl posted a “triple-double” to lead Northeastern in the match. The freshman finished with 13 kills, 24 assists and 11 digs while Bacon had 10 kills and 12 digs for the “double-double.”
Towson returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 when the Tigers travel to Hofstra for a 1 p.m. match.
