HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra University hit .390 en route to a 3-0 victory over the Towson University volleyball team on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Sophomore Haley Pa'akaula hit .467 with nine kills to lead the Tigers.
Hofstra jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first set on a kill from Sara Campolina. Towson pulled to within six, 15-9 on a kill from junior Saitaua Iosia. However, that was the last point scored by the Tigers in the set. The Pride closed out the set by scoring the final 10 points to claim the 25-9 set win.
The Pride continued its strong play by scoring seven of the first eight points in the second set to grab an early advantage. The Tigers used a 6-3 run to make it 10-7 in the set. Iosia had a kill and a block assist during that stretch. The two teams continued to trade points before a 3-0 run gave Hofstra a 16-10 lead. A kill and a service ace from Kaitlyn Krause eventually gave Hofstra a 25-17 set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Hofstra (13-9, 4-3 CAA) opened the third set on a 6-3 run only to see the Tigers pull to within one, 7-6 on a kill from Iosia. The Pride pushed their lead back to four, 13-9 on a kill from Kelsie Wills. The two teams continued to battle as a Tiger (6-19, 0-7 CAA) attack error gave the home team a 19-12 advantage. Hofstra went on to earn the 25-20 set win on a kill from Wills.
Pa'akaula added three digs and a block to her strong hitting performance. Iosia finished with a team-high 10 kills while junior Aimee Schubert contributed 13 assists. Sophomore Kelsey Polak came off the bench to dish out nine assists and a team-high five digs.
Wills led Hofstra with 15 kills and seven digs while Krause finished with 26 assists and five digs.
Towson returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when the Tigers head to Annapolis, Md. to face Navy at 7 p.m.
