TOWSON, Md. – UNC Wilmington battled back from a 1-0 deficit for a 3-1 win over the Towson University volleyball team on Saturday afternoon in the season finale for the Tigers.
The Tigers honored senior Dayane Van Ass prior to the match as she was playing in the final match of her career.
Towson came out hot to start the first set, opening up an early 8-4 lead on a service ace by junior Paige Sekerak. A kill from junior Saitaua Iosia increased the home team advantage to 15-7. The Tigers used an attack error by the Seahawks to take a 20-12 lead in the set. UNC Wilmington scored six of the next 10 points to make it 24-18. A kill from sophomore Candace Steadman clinched a 25-18 set victory for the Tigers.
UNC Wilmington rebounded in the second set and opened up a 15-10 lead on a kill from Christi Laite. A kill from Meredith Peacock pushed the visitors' lead to 19-13. A kill from Van Ass and a service ace from sophomore Kyana Miller pulled the Tigers to within six, 23-17. However, the Seahawks tied the match at 1-1 as Laite's kill closed out a 25-18 set win for UNC Wilmington.
The third set was close, as neither team was able to open up a lead of more than three points. UNC Wilmington led 13-10 before a kill from Van Ass and an error by the Seahawks made it 13-12. A service ace from Lindsay Hartmann gave the Seahawks an 18-15 advantage. The two teams traded points as a kill from Steadman pulled Towson to within two, 24-22. Laite had a kill on the next play to secure the 25-22 set win for the Seahawks. The set victory gave UNC Wilmington a 2-1 lead in the match.
The two teams battled early in the fourth set and found themselves tied at 12-12 on a kill from Iosia. A service error by the Tigers on the next play started a 4-0 run that gave the visitors the lead back for good. UNC Wilmington pushed its lead to 17-13 on a Laite kill. A kill from Van Ass made it 20-14 in the set. However, a service error and four straight attack errors by the Tigers gave UNC Wilmington a 24-15 lead. UNC Wilmington finished off the 25-15 set win on a Nicole Lott kill.
Iosia led the Tigers with 14 kills and eight digs while Van Ass had 10 kills in her final match as a Tiger. Miller dished out 27 assists while junior Aimee Schubert had 24 assists. Junior Paige Sekerak posted a career-high 31 digs in the contest. Sekerak's digs put her over 500 digs for the season. She is just the third player in program history and the first since 2005 to reach that mark.
Laite led UNC Wilmington with 12 kills while Lott had 11 kills and 10 digs.
The Tigers lose Van Ass to graduation but return 17 letter winners next season.
