Tigers Extend Streak with 3-2 Win over Binghamton

RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Saitaua Iosia posted 15 kills and 12 digs for her first “double-double” of the season to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Binghamton in the opening match of the N.C. State Courtyard Midtown Classic Friday.

Fellow junior Victoria Williams tied Iosia for the team lead in kills as the Tigers (3-3) ran their win streak to three straight matches.

Binghamton (0-4) turned in its strongest hitting set of the match in the first, finishing with a .407 percentage. That hitting percentage allowed the Bearcats to claim a 25-19 set win and take the early lead in the match. Towson rebounded in the second set, hitting .321 to Binghamton's .027 and earned a 25-16 victory to even the match at 1-1.

The third set proved to be a tight close contest as the two squads battled through 14 ties and six lead changes. The Tigers closed out the set with a kill from Iosia and an attack error by the Bearcats to earn a 26-24 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match. In the fourth set tied at 16-16, the Bearcats used a kill from Allison Hovie to take a lead they would not relinquish. Binghamton tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-20 set win.

The Tigers grabbed an early lead in the fifth and deciding set, only to see the Bearcats battle back and tie the set at 7-7. The two squads continued to trade points, however Towson found itself trailing 13-12 following a kill from Kristin Hovie. Towson proved it was not done though as a sophomore Candace Steadman tied the set with a kill. Following a Bearcat error, junior Paige Sekerak delivered a service ace to give the Tigers a 15-13 set victory and a win in the match.

Iosia's “double-double” was the first by a Tiger this season. She added three assists and three blocks to go along with her kills and digs. Williams contributed six digs and seven blocks to go along with her 15 kills. Sophomore Kelsey Polak dished out 36 assists along with nine digs while Sekerak had a team-high 17 digs.

Kristin Hovie and Grace Vickers led Binghamton with 12 kills each.

Towson returns to action on Saturday, September 7 for day two of the N.C. State Courtyard Midtown Classic. The Tigers battle Appalachian State at 10:30 a.m. and N.C. State at 7 p.m.
