Tigers Win First Game Of Season, 3-2, Over Hoyas

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Towson University field hockey team earned its first win of the season on Friday night, defeating the Georgetown Hoyas by a 3-2 score at the Maryland Field Hockey Complex in a neutral site game. It is the first win in the career of first-year Tiger head coach Carly Powell.

The Tigers (1-2) got goals from Sam Zelenack, Kelsey Jones and Kate Williams in the win. However, Towson found itself in an early deficit after Georgetown (0-3) scored the game's opening goal. Sarah Butterfield's second goal of the season less than four minutes into the game gave the Hoyas the a 1-0 lead.

But the Tiger offense found its way as the game progressed, and for the second time in three games this season, the Tigers went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers took eight shots in the first half and took the lead when Jones tallied her first goal of the season with 2:27 left.

The Towson defense made the lead stand up, limiting the Hoyas offense to six shots in the second half. The Tigers then added an insurance goal when Zelenack scored her team-leading second goal of the season with 8:15 remaining in the game. The goal gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Georgetown would pull to within 3-2 when Maria McDonald scored an unassisted goal with less than five minutes to play, ending the scoring.

Goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo made one save in the win for Towson, lowering her goals-against average to 2.04.

The Tigers also earned a victory in College Park last season, a 3-2 win over UC Davis in overtime.

Towson returns home to Unitas Stadium on Sunday against Lehigh. The game against the Mountain Hawks will begin at 12 p.m.
