PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Led by junior running running back Terrance West, five members of the NCAA FCS runner-up Towson University football team were named to the FCS All-America team, selected by the College Sports Journal.
A consensus first team All-American, West was named as the CSJ Offensive Player of the Year. Also named as the Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year, West led the Tigers to a 13-3 record and a berth in the NCAA FCS championship game by rushing for an NCAA FCS record 2,509 yards with an FCS record 41 rushing touchdowns.
Senior tackle Eric Pike, sophomore fullback Emmanuel Holder, senior cornerback Jordan Love and junior cornerback Tye Smith were also named to the 63-member All-America team. Senior linebacker Telvion Clark earned honorable mention All-America notice.
West's 42 total touchdowns and 252 points were both NCAA FCS single season records, breaking two marks held by Omar Cuff of Delaware. When West scampered for 354 yards on 29 carries in a 49-39 NCAA FCS quarterfinal win over Eastern Illinois in a snow storm, it shattered the standard for FCS single-game playoff rushing yards previously held by Adrian Peterson of Georgia Southern (333 rushing yards, set in 1999 against Massachusetts).
A 6-5, 298-pount tackle, Pike earned first team All-CAA honors as a junior and senior. He was a third team All-CAA selection in 2011 when he was a sophomore. A two-year co-captain, Pike set a school record by playing in 50 career games. He also started every game of his college career.
A first team All-CAA selection, Holder caught 16 passes for 172 yards and scored three touchdowns this season. An outstanding blocker, he is a two-year starter at fullback who was a Freshman All-American selection last year.
A starter in 13 of 14 games, Love earned first team All-CAA honors this season. He ranked seventh on the team with 64 tackles. He also ranked second on the team by breaking up 10 passes.
A second team All-CAA selection, Smith is
a three-year starter. He made 103 tackles this season, third on the team. Smith also led the Tigers by breaking up 12 passes. He also intercepted two passes and forced two fumbles.
A two-time selection as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week, Clark earned first team All-CAA notice. He led the Tigers with 145 tackles and made 10.5 tackles for lost yardage. He led the CAA with five forced fumbles and he had three fumble recoveries. Clark also had 4.5 sacks.
National champion North Dakota State led all teams with six players on the CSJ All-America team and one additional athlete on the honorable mention team for a total of seven honorees. NCAA FCS runner-up Towson was second with five players on the 63-man squad and one more honorable mention pick for a total of six honorees.
