BOX SCORE PHILADELPHIA - Both of the senior co-captains,
Katie Ponce and
Sofia Read, scored to lead the Towson women's soccer team to a 2-2 double-overtime draw with Drexel Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
"We got a great result, especially under the [very windy] conditions," said Head Coach
Greg Paynter. "We had the wind in the first half and scored early. They got their second goal, and then we got a goal against the run of play to tie it up.
Vasthy Delgado,
Maddie Bove and
Cait Oswald did well in their new roles in the back. [Drexel] scored on two set pieces, not through playing the ball down the field. Overall, we're really pleased to get two good results on the road this weekend."
Read got the Tigers (4-8-4, 1-4-2 CAA) on the board first with her strike at 25:37. She was assisted by sophomore
Emily Marshall. Drexel's Melissa Chapman evened the score at 1-1 on a header off a corner kick in the 50th minute. The Dragons (7-6-3, 4-1-2 CAA) briefly took the lead on a Megan Hammaker goal before Ponce added her team-leading fifth goal of the year at 81:25.
The teams fought through two overtimes. Sophomore
Natalia Pinkney had a chance to win it at the end of the first overtime, but Dragon keeper Kelsie Fye made a diving stop. Senior
Erin Quinn made a season-best 11 saves in net for Towson. It was one short of her career high, set against William & Mary in 2012. The Dragons outshot the Tigers 29-12 and took 11 corners to Towson's 1.
Towson returns to action on Friday, Oct. 24 for its final two CAA games of the season: Elon on Friday at 2 p.m. and William & Mary on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. Sunday's match will be senior day for the Tigers.
