BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Junior guard
Dominique Johnson scored a team-high 19 points but it was not enough as the Towson University women's basketball team fell to the University of Rhode Island, 60-49 on the opening day of the LIU Turkey Classic, Friday. Johnson hit three three-pointers in the game, including the 100
th of her career.
The two teams traded three-pointers early as Johnson's triple at 14:40 was the fifth one of the game. Rhode Island (2-3) held a 9-8 lead following that basket. A 12-4 run by the Rams gave Rhode Island a 21-12 lead with 5:06 to go in the half.
Symone Bullard had eight of the Rams' 12 points during that stretch. A lay-up from freshman center
Daijha Thomas pulled the Tigers to within seven, 21-14 with 2:23 remaining in the first half. Rhode Island scored the next five points and took a 26-14 lead. That 12-point advantage with 1:40 showing on the clock was the Rams' largest lead of the half. Back-to-back buckets from redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen made it a 26-18 game at the intermission.
Rhode Island shot 45.5% from the field in the first half and made five three-pointers. Towson shot 24.2% and made two shots from behind the arc. The Tigers held a slim 20-18 edge in the rebounding battle.
Towson got a couple of quick baskets from Johnson to start the second half and cut the deficit to six, 28-22 with 18:26 remaining in the game. The two teams battled before a lay-up from
Charise Wilson at 14:32 pushed the Rams' lead back to 12, 34-22. A three-pointer from Wilson at 13:07 extended the Rhode Island lead to 39-25 that was the Rams' largest lead of the game.
The Tigers continued to battle as Johnson hit her second three-pointer of the game and 100
th of her career at 9:36, which made it a 43-34 game. She is the eighth player in program history to connect on at least 100 career three-pointers.
That three started an 8-2 run for the Tigers and made it a 45-39 game with 6:25 to play. Johnson and freshman guard
Breonn Hughey sandwiched their three-pointers around a bucket from senior guard
Markell Smith. A lay-up from Wilson gave Rhode Island a nine-point lead but the Tigers cut it back to seven, 50-43 on Johnson's three-pointer at 4:15. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch but Rhode Island went 5-for-6 from the line in the final minute to seal the 60-49 victory.
Rhode Island shot 38.1% from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 41.9%. Towson shot 32.3% in the second stanza and 28.1% for the game. Both teams finished the game with 41 rebounds.
Johnson added four assists and three rebounds to go with her team-high 19 points. Hines-Allen contributed nine points, nine rebounds and five steals. Smith finished with four points and eight rebounds.
Wilson led Rhode Island with 25 points, six rebounds and six steals while Bullard tallied 12 points off the bench.
Towson (2-3) wraps up the LIU Turkey Classic when it faces La Salle on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 4:30 p.m.
