Late Run Lifts Navy Over Tigers, 55-51

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy closed the game on a 7-2 run to claim a 55-51 comeback win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Tuesday night in Alumni Hall. The late run negated another strong game by the Tigers' LaTorri Hines-Allen who had 21 points and eight rebounds.

Both teams had to work to find their shots in the early going as the game was tied at 6-6 with 11:42 to play in the half. Hines-Allen had four of the Tigers' six points during that stretch. Navy (5-3) used an 8-0 run to take a 14-6 lead with nine minutes remaining in the half. Sarita Condie had four of the Mids' eight points, including the three-pointer that capped the run. That was the last basket by Navy until there were 14 seconds left in the half. During that stretch of 8:45, the Tigers scored 15 unanswered points and took a 21-14 lead. Hines-Allen had five points during that stretch run while freshman guard Shanea Butler tallied four points. Haley Unger made a lay-up with 14 seconds left in the half to break Navy's scoreless streak. Towson took a 21-16 lead at the half.

Towson shot just 27.6% from the field but connected on all five of its free throw opportunities. Navy shot 25.9% in the first half. The Tigers held a 23-20 advantage in the rebounding battle.

The Tigers (2-5) opened the second half on a 16-9 run and led 37-25 with 12:32 to play in the game. The 12-point advantage was Towson's largest of the game. Hines-Allen had eight points for the Tigers during that run while Butler had four points. The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes and the Tiger lead fluctuated between nine and 11 points during that stretch. Hines-Allen's jumper at 9:44 gave Towson a 41-30 advantage. Ashanti Kennedy connected on a jumper at 8:51 that started a 12-4 run by the Mids. Kennedy had four points during that run that pulled the home team to within four, 45-41 with 6:20 to play.

A pair of free throws from junior guard Dominique Johnson at 5:57 pushed the Tiger lead back to six, 47-41. Navy scored the next seven points in the game and took a 48-47 lead with 2:54 to go. Taylor Dunham had five points while Peri Curtis hit the jumper to put the home team ahead. Johnson put the Tigers back on top, 49-48 with her basket at 2:15. Curtis connected on a three-pointer at 1:23 that jump started the decisive 7-2 run that gave Navy the 55-51 win.

Navy shot 48% from the field in the second half and 36.5% for the game. The Mids took advantage of their opportunities at the free throw line in the second half, going 11-for-17. Towson shot 35.3% from the field in the second half and 31.7% for the game. Towson led the rebounding battle 46-39.

Hines-Allen's 21 points were a game-high and marked the second straight game she scored 20 or more points for the Tigers. Butler contributed a season-high 10 points and four rebounds while Johnson had eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

Curtis led Navy with 12 points and five rebounds while Dunham added 11 points and three assists. The Mids got a huge boost from their bench as they scored 42 bench points in the game.

Towson is back in action when it travels to Loyola on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
