BALTIMORE, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team scored 21 of the game's first 28 points en route to a 63-50 win at Loyola University on Thursday night. The Tigers (3-5) snapped a three-game losing streak as six Tigers scored at least four points in a balanced victory.
The two sides battled early and found themselves tied at 5-5 with 15:56 to play in the first half. Senior guard
Markell Smith put back a lay-up at 15:26 that started a 16-2 run by the visitors. That scoring stretch was capped by a jumper from redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen at 10:06 which gave the Tigers a 21-7 lead. Hines-Allen and Smith had four points each for the Tigers during that stretch. Loyola (0-6) responded with a 9-2 run of its own and cut the Tiger lead to 23-16 with 5:52 to play in the half.
Lisa Mirarchi had five points for the Greyhounds during that run. Towson scored nine of the final 14 points in the half and took a 32-21 lead at the break. Senior forward
Camille Alberson had four points for the Tigers during that run.
Towson shot 46.7% from the field in the first half and made four three-pointers. Loyola shot 30.8% from the field while making three three-pointers. The Greyhounds held a 19-17 edge in the rebounding battle.
Towson opened the second half on a 12-4 run and took a 44-25 lead with 13:19 to play in the game. That was Towson's largest lead of the game. Junior guard
Dominique Johnson scored five of the Tigers' 12 during that stretch. Loyola scored 23 of the next 29 points in the game and cut the Tiger lead to 50-48 with 4:49 to play. The Greyhounds hit five three-pointers during that scoring spurt.
Colleen Marshall tallied 11 points during that run for Loyola. Johnson hit a pair of free throws at 4:26 that halted the Loyola run. That was the start of six straight points from Johnson which helped the Tigers push their lead back to eight, 56-48 with 53 seconds to play. Towson went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final 50 seconds of the game to seal the 63-50 victory. Hines-Allen made five of the Tigers' seven while Smith connected on the other two.
Towson shot 40% from the field in the second half and 43.6% for the game. Loyola shot 28.6% in the second stanza and 29.5% for the game. The Greyhounds led the rebounding battled 45-35.
Johnson led all scorers with 18 points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds. Hines-Allen added 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for the Tigers. Freshman guard
Breonn Hughey contributed nine points, six rebounds and four rebounds while Smith had seven points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. As a team the Tigers blocked a season-high 11 shots in the contest.
Mirarchi led Loyola with 17 points and five rebounds while Marshall added 16 points and seven boards.
Towson is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 7 when the Tigers travel to No. 15/10 Maryland for a 2 p.m. game in College Park.
