COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 15/10 University of Maryland women's basketball team earned a 81-52 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in College Park, Maryland. Towson was led by redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen who had a game-high 21 points.
"Tough game for us today, their interior play gave us problems from beginning to end," said Towson Head Coach
Niki Reid Geckeler. "Our young women kept fighting and I'm pretty happy with their effort."
Hines-Allen got off to hot start for the Tigers as she had eight points in the first three and a half minutes of the game. Her lay-up at 16:33 gave Towson a 10-7 lead. A 6-0 run helped Maryland take a lead it would not relinquish, 13-10 with 12:47 to play.
Brionna Jones had four of the Terps (7-2) six points during that run. A bucket from senior forward
Camille Alberson briefly halted the Maryland run and made it a 13-12 game with 12:23 to play in the half.
Maryland scored the next 16 points and took a 29-12 lead with 6:36 to play in the half. Junior guard
Dominique Johnson briefly halted the Terps' run with a jumper at 6:14. However, Maryland scored 11 of the final 17 points in the half and took a 40-20 lead at the break.
Maryland shot 51.4% from the field and held Towson to just a 31.3%. The Terps were aided in the first half by 18 points from their bench. Hines-Allen led the Tigers at the half with 12 points and six rebounds.
Maryland opened the second half on a 9-0 run and outscored the Tigers 41-32 in the second 20 minutes of action. Highlighting the second half action for the Tigers was a career-high seven points from sophomore forward
Brianna Bush off the bench. In addition, freshman guard
Ece Yurdakul drained the first three-pointer of her career. Yurdakul's basket was the last of the game for either team and came at 1:10. Neither team was able to get anything to fall in the final minute as Maryland claimed the 81-52 victory.
Maryland shot 47.1% from the field in the second half and 49.3% for the game. Towson shot 35.3% in the second stanza and 33.3% for the game. Maryland won the rebounding battle 48-32.
Hines-Allen's 21 points marked the fourth time this season that she has scored 20 or more points in a game. She added a team-high eight rebounds and four steals. Johnson added nine points, five rebounds and two assists as she recorded the 200
th assist of her career. Alberson had seven points, four rebounds and two blocks.
Jones led Maryland with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Towson is now off for 11 days for finals. The Tigers resume action on Thursday, Dec. 18 when they travel to Wake Forest for an 11:30 a.m. game.
