BALTIMORE, Md. – Towson Lacrosse spotted No. 9 Loyola (2-1) a 9-0 lead and was unable to recover as the Greyhounds earned a 20-4 win over the Tigers (1-2) Wednesday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Loyola jumped out to a 10-0 lead by the start of the second quarter. Junior co-captain Greg Cuccinello broke Loyola's stranglehold with his fifth goal in two games at 11:41 in the second frame. The 'Hounds took an 11-1 lead into the half and stayed in front the rest of the way. Freshmen Joe Seider and Ryan Drenner and sophomore Chris Vetter each added a goal in the fourth quarter for Towson.
“I don't know what to say right now,” noted Head Coach Shawn Nadelen. “Obviously Loyola came to play and we didn't. We have a lot to work on.
“I thought we had a couple decent opportunities on offense in the first quarter. [Loyola goalie Jack] Runkel was seeing the ball well early, but I'm not sure we really tested him where we wanted to. We had trouble on defense. Pretty much anything they shot was going in…our defense was giving up layups.”
The Tigers scored their fewest goals since a 3-2 loss at then-No. 15 Loyola in 2011. The 16-goal margin of defeat was Towson's largest since a 24-8 loss to then-No. 1 Johns Hopkins on May 12, 1981.
Loyola took a 9-0 lead into the second quarter before Cuccinello was able to strike for Towson. However, the Tigers then went on a nearly 31-minute scoreless streak, at which point the Greyhounds led 17-1.
The Tigers have a quick turnaround, hosting Georgetown on Saturday, Feb. 22 at noon in the first half of a double-header with the women's team.
