Tigers Win Long-Awaited Home Opener, 8-4

TOWSON, Md. – Senior centerfielder Brandon Gonnella had two hits and drove in three runs as the Tigers (12-8) celebrated their long-awaited home opener with an 8-4 victory over Georgetown University (9-12) at John B. Schuerholz Park on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Tigers won their three-game weekend series against the Hoyas. On Friday and Saturday, the two teams played at Georgetown where the Hoyas won the opener and Towson won on Saturday.

Gonnella went two-for-four with a walk to lead the Tigers' 11-hit attack. He had an RBI single in the fourth inning and gave Towson a 7-2 lead in the sixth inning with a two-run double.

Gonnella also pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief, nailing down the win by striking out two of the four batters he faced.

In the fourth game between the teams this season, the Hoyas took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Senior first baseman Steve Anderson started the rally with a double to left centerfield with one out. After Anderson reached third base when Christian Venditti grounded out to third, Anderson scored the first run of the game when freshman second baseman Jake Kuzbel reached base on an infield single. However, freshman righthander Kevin Ross of Towson escaped the inning when he got Eric Webber to ground out to third base.

The Tigers came right back in the bottom of the second inning and grabbed a lead by scoring three unearned runs. Junior first baseman Peter Bowles led off with a double to left centerfield. When junior third baseman Brendan Butler reached base on an error, Bowles advanced to third base. With runners on first and third, Chris Henze was retired on a popup to first base and senior Pat Fitzgerald popped up a bunt attempt to Will Brown, the Georgetown pitcher.

Just when it appeared that Brown would escape the jam, he threw a wild pitch that allowed Bowles to score the tying run. Catcher Zach Fisher followed with a base hit to right that scored Butler to give Towson a 2-1 lead. Another wild pitch by Brown enabled Bennett to score, putting Towson ahead, 3-1. Brown pitched out of the inning when he retired Gonnella on a fly ball to centerfield.

With two outs in the third inning, Bowles singled and stole second base. When Butler singled to left, Bowles gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead when he scored from second base. Henze grounded out to end the inning.

The Tigers added another two-out run in the fourth inning. Fisher drew a walk, stole second base and scored on a single by Gonnella. However, Gonnella was picked off base to end the rally.

In the fifth inning, the Hoyas rallied to pull within 5-2. Pitching in relief, senior Greg Baruka gave up a leadoff single to Beau Hall. When Ryan Busch drew a walk, Georgetown had two runners on base. Senior Patrick Camporini reached on a bunt single to load the bases. When catcher Nick Collins grounded out, Hall scored to cut the deficit to 5-2. However, Baruka pitched out of the jam when A.C. Carter grounded out to Butler at third base. Butler threw to the plate to retire Busch trying to score. Anderson grounded out to second base, ending the rally.

The Tigers added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth by adding three more runs. With two outs, Bennett singled and Fisher drew a walk. Gonnella drove in two runs when he doubled down the rightfield line.

In the seventh inning, the Hoyas added two more runs to pull within 8-4. Hall walked to start the inning and advanced to second base on an infield grounder by Busch. Camporini singled to right, putting runners at first and third base. Collins cut the lead to 8-3 when he singled down the right field line as Hall scored. Sophomore righthander Garrett Walther came in from the Towson bullpen to relieve Baruka. After walking A.C. Carter to load the bases, Walther gave up a sacrifice fly to Anderson, making it an 8-4 lead. Walther pitched out of the inning by getting Evan Ryan to ground out to shortstop.

Walther retired the first two batters of the eighth inning before turning the game over to Gonnella, who struck out two of the four hitters he faced.

The Tigers, who outhit Georgetown by an 11-7 margin, were led by Bowles, who went three-for-four with two runs scored. Gonnella and Fratantuono each had a pair of hits while Fisher went one-for-two with a pair of walks.

Camporini and Collins led Georgetown with two hits each.

Baruka earned his second win of the season. He pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Walther and Gonnella followed with 2.2 innings of hitless relief.

The Tigers, who played their first 19 games on the road, played the first of 10 straight home games on Sunday. Towson returns to action on Tuesday, March 25 when the Tigers host Coppin State at 3:30 p.m.
