TOWSON, Md. - Senior pitcher Kyle Paul threw a complete game, five-hit shutout, leading the Towson University baseball team to a 7-0 win over Colonial Athletic Association rival Delaware on Saturday afternoon.
Paul was unrattled despite the game being pushed back over two hours due to weather concerns. He threw 78 of his 108 pitches for strikes, keeping the Blue Hens off-balance with an array of offspeed offerings.
Towson (21-25-1, 3-13-1 CAA) used homeruns from Kurt Wertz, Brady Policelli and Pat Fitzgerald to supply much of the Tiger offensive output. After Delaware (22-23, 9-8 CAA) lost starting pitcher Brandon Hinkle after just 0.1 innings pitched, Towson tagged Blue Hen reliever Kevin Milley for six runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
Spencer Sutton had an RBI double that scored Policelli to open the scoring in the second inning. Sutton came around to score when Fitzgerald launched second homer of the year to leftfield. That gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead after the second inning.
After Hunter Bennett and Dominic Fratantuono walked to lead off the bottom of the third inning,Wertz added a three-run homer, his 11th round-tripper of the year, to give the Tigers a comfortable 6-0 lead after three innings.
Paul made the lead stand up, easily retiring Delaware with his efficient outing. He allowed just one hit after the fourth inning, retiring 12 straight batters at one point in the win.
Policelli added his fourth homer of the year in the seventh inning to end the scoring.
The Tigers conclude the regular season on Sunday against the Blue Hens at 1 p.m. Towson will honor its eight seniors in a pre-game ceremony prior to the game's first pitch.
