BOX SCORE HARRISONBURG, Va. - Freshman
Gabby Scirica scored her first career goal just 1:05 into Towson women's soccer's 1-1 season-opening draw with UMass Friday afternoon in the opening round of the JMU Invitational.
On one of the first plays of the match, Scirica collected a loose rebound, and her shot deflected off UMass' Danielle Kriscenski and into the goal. Almost 22 minutes later, the Minutemen got on the board with a goal from Megan Burke.
Alyssa Fratarcangeli's flick-on header set up Burke's breakaway goal.
"We got off to a great start, getting that early goal," noted Head Coach
Greg Paynter. "The first half was pretty even the rest of the way. They got one good chance when we weren't organized. In the second half, we played some high-quality soccer. In overtime we had the better of the play, but they had a good chance with about 30 seconds left that could have won it. It was a very even game."
UMass outshot the Tigers 19-13 overall but held a narrow 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Minutemen earned seven corners to Towson's five but committed four offsides violations. Senior
Erin Quinn made five saves for the Tigers, while Kriscenski stopped four shots.
"I think the contribution from our freshmen was good in both quality and quantity," continued Paynter.
Maddie Bove (88 min.), Scirica (84),
Kristyn Hubbard (110), and
Cait Oswald (64) all saw a lot of playing time. Bove and Oswald both took two shots.
Towson concludes play at the JMU Invitational on Sunday when the Tigers face Xavier at 11:30 a.m.
