BOX SCORE HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior
Taylor Knier and sophomore
Natalia Pinkney each tallied their first goals of the season as the Towson (1-0-1) women's soccer team defeated Xavier (0-2), 2-0, Sunday afternoon in the JMU Invitational.
"It was good to get two good results 'on the road',"said Head Coach
Greg Paynter. "Overall I think our backline did a great job. And we got a tremendous amount of offensive pressure with our outside backs going forward. It was great to see that this early in the season. Quinn had one just super save late in the second half to keep us in the lead. She was her typical self - consistent and steady - and when we needed a good stop, she came up with it."
After the teams reached halftime still scoreless, both teams came out still looking for the game-winner. Towson found it in the 61st minute when sophomore
Emily Marshall sent in a corner, connecting wtih Knier, who headed it in on the right post.
With just 59 seconds left in the game, Pinkney added the Tigers' insurance goal when she gathered a loose ball, took it to the corner and beat the Xavier goalkeeper near post. The assist was credited to senior
Katie Ponce.
Senior
Erin Quinn made five saves on the day. Katie Markesberry made six for Xavier.
Towson returns to action on Friday, August 29 when the Tigers host DePaul at 4 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
