Tigers Fall, 1-0, to DePaul in Home Opener

Senior Katie Ponce
BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. - The Towson women's soccer team made a second-half charge, but the visiting Blue Demons of DePaul (3-0) held off the Tigers (1-1-1), 1-0, Friday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

DePaul held possession for a good deal of the first half and capitalized on miscommunication in the Tiger midfield when Abby Reed scored a breakaway goal at 39:09. Towson came out of the break in good form and mounted a comeback in the final frame. The Tigers had their best chances in the final 20 minutes of the game on a shot from senior Katie Ponce that went wide and a free kick taken by senior Taylor Knier.

"I think DePaul is a very good team, an NCAA tournament team," noted Head Coach Greg Paynter. "They showed that in the first half ... they certainly had most of the game, and we were chasing it. I think it was a fair result, but I think we showed the kind of team we're going to be this year. We put them under pressure in the second half, and we certainly had the better of the play in the second half.

Senior Erin Quinn made two saves for the Tigers. DePaul outshot Towson 8-4 and held a 4-1 corner kick advantage.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday, August 31 when they host Georgetown at 1 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
