BOX SCORE MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore
Taylor Huewe had a career-high 10 kills to lead a balanced attack in the Towson University volleyball team's 3-0 win over Savannah State on Friday night at the Alabama State Tournament. Towson had nine players record at least one kill as they improved to 8-0 on the year.
"We gave our young kids an opportunity to play and once they settled down after the first set, we saw some good plays out of the group," said Towson Head Coach
Don Metil. "It's nice to rest some of our starters (
Saitaua Iosia and
Victoria Williams) heading into much more difficult matches tomorrow."
Both teams struggled hitting the ball in the first set as Savannah State (2-6) hit -.107 to Towson's -.148 in the set. The two squads battled through seven ties and four lead changes. Trailing 22-21 in the set, Towson scored four straight points to claim the 25-22 set victory. Huewe had a kill while redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert had a pair of service aces to key the late run.
Towson took advantage of four straight attack errors by Savannah State to open up a 5-1 lead in the second set. A block from junior
Haley Pa'akaula made it 11-4. Freshman
Payton Windell's kill advanced the lead to 16-7. Towson closed the set with three straight kills from Huewe for a 25-11 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Towson used a 9-0 run to open up a 15-4 advantage in the third set. That run included a pair of kills from Huewe and a block from Huewe and fellow sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty. A pair of service aces from Flaherty pushed the Tiger lead to 22-6. The teams traded points down the stretch before a service error from Savannah State gave Towson a 25-9 set victory and a 3-0 win in the match.
Huewe added five digs and two blocks to go along with her career-high in kills. Windell tallied seven kills, seven digs and three blocks. Freshman
Barbara Lopez dished out 10 assists while senior
Paige Sekerak contributed 11 digs.
Gabrielle Nathaniel led Savannah State with five kills and three digs.
Towson wraps up play at the Alabama State Tournament on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Tigers take on Southern Mississippi at 11:30 a.m. and Alabama at 2:30 p.m.
