PHOTO GALLERYPHOENIX, Md. -- In a thrilling 2014 Towson Tignanelli Invitational, Towson and Delaware finished with identical scores. However, the Blue Hens won the team crown for the second straight year due to tiebreaking rules.
The squads, who ended round one also tied, each finished with a 305 team score on Monday. The Tigers raced out to an early lead through the first 12 holes, but Delaware closed strong and tied the match on the final hole of the tournament.
Delaware's
Rachel Lee hit a 12-foot birdie putt on 18 to guarantee the Blue Hens at least a share of the title. However, Towson junior
Krissy Unger hit a 10-foot putt to also give the Tigers a share of the crown.
"The team played with heart and emotion all weekend and I'm so proud of them," said Towson Head Coach
Kate Schanuel. "The freshmen are showing they are ready to compete and three Top 5 individual finishes and two solid team rounds prove this team has what it takes to be at the top."
Playing as an individual, Delaware's
Nathalie Filler won the individual title with a 146 (75-71). Towson freshman
Mackenzie Rice led for much of the day before finishing alone in second-place with a 148 (75-73).
Sophomore
Stephanie Bosdosh and junior
Krissy Unger joined Rice as Top 5 finishers. In her first event as a Tiger, Bosdosh finished alone in fourth-place with a 151 (75-76). Unger, who led last year's team with an 80.2 scoring average, claimed a share of fifth-place by carding a 152 (74-78).
Behind the Blue Hens and Tigers, Long Island (620), Bethune-Cookman (623) and Albany (630) rounded out the Top 5 squads in the 15-team field.
Larissa Spiess cut a stroke off her round one score with a 78 on Monday, while
Emma Hjarne trimmed five strokes off her opening round score by posting an 80 during the final round.
The Tigers will look to build off their strong start to the 2014 fall season when they compete next at the William & Mary Invitational, which begins on September 14.
*The Tiebreaker ruling used to determine the team winner is as follows: The first tiebreaker was to see which team dropped the lowest score during the final round. Each team dropped an 80 on Monday. The second tiebreaker was to see which team dropped the lowest score during the first round. Towson dropped an 85, while Delaware dropped an 81, thus the Blue Hens were declared the winners.
