Tigers Fall to Hofstra, 58-42

TOWSON, Md. – An 8-2 run to start the second half allowed Hofstra University to break open a close game and post a 58-42 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in SECU Arena. Senior forward Camille Alberson led the Tigers with eight rebounds.

Senior guard Ciara Webb's three-pointer at 9:54 of the first half gave Towson a 6-5 lead. Four straight points from Ashunae Durant gave Hofstra a 9-6 lead with 5:59 to go in the half. Freshman guard Breonn Hughey's three-pointer at 4:55 tied the game at 9-9. An 8-0 run gave Hofstra a 17-9 lead with 2:23 remaining on the clock. The Pride scored all eight of those points at the foul line. Elo Edeferioka had four of the Pride's eight. Webb's second triple of the half halted the Hofstra run and made it a 17-12 game. Hofstra answered with a three-pointer for a 20-12 advantage. Webb connected on a pair of free throws with four seconds left in the half and Hofstra took a 20-14 lead at the half.

Hofstra shot 20% from the field in the first half to Towson's 14.3%. The Tigers held a slim 21-20 edge in the rebounding battle. Webb led all scorers with eight points at the break.

The 8-2 run by the Pride to open the second half gave Hofstra a 28-16 lead with 15:10 to play. Edeferioka recorded six of the eight points during that scoring stretch. The two teams traded baskets before a three-pointer from Alberson made it a 31-21 lead with 14:04 left in the game. Hofstra scored the next eight points in the game and took a 39-21 lead with 11:38 to play. The two teams continued to battle as Webb's jumper at 9:46 made it a 41-27 game. However, that was as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way. The Pride's lead would fluctuate between 15 and 25 points over the next nine minutes. A lay-up from senior guard Markell Smith with 24 seconds to play made the final score 58-42 in favor of the visitors.

Hofstra (11-4, 4-0 CAA) shot 46.9% from the field in the second half and 36.5% for the game. The Pride were aidded by going 16-for-21 from the foul line in the game. Towson (6-10, 2-2 CAA) shot 41.4% in the second half and 28.1% for the game. Hofstra won the rebounding battle, 41-37.

Webb led the Tigers with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Redshirt senior LaTorri Hines-Allen had 11 points and seven rebounds while junior guard Dominique Johnson had nine points and five rebounds. Alberson's eight rebounds tied her career-high.

Ederferioka led Hofstra with 17 points and nine rebounds while Darius Faulk had six points, five rebounds and eight assists.

Towson is back in action on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. when the Tigers travel to College of Charleston.
