CHARLESTON, S.C. – A balanced team effort led the Towson University women's basketball team to a 56-52 road win at the College of Charleston on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Tigers (7-10, 3-2 CAA) had six players score at least six points in the game and that group was led by redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen who finished with 17 points.
"It was a good bounce back for us tonight," said Towson Head Coach
Niki Reid Geckeler. "After our last performance to come out against a tough College of Charleston win is a good thing. We shot the ball well in the second half and got a few defensive stops."
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that featured nine tied and five lead changes. Neither team took a lead of more than two points in the half. Towson went up 9-7 on a three-pointer from senior guard
Ciara Webb at 12:28 but the Cougars (3-13, 1-4 CAA) responded with a basket. The two teams continued to trade baskets. Sophomore forward
Brianna Bush gave Towson a 23-21 lead with 27 seconds left in the half. However,
Mikaela Hopkins hit a jumper with 11 seconds left in the stanza that tied the game at 23-23. The two teams went into the half all tied up.
Towson shot 35.5% from the field in the first half while the Cougars were 10-for-35 (28.6%). Towson held a 24-23 edge in the rebounding battle after 20 minutes of play. Hines-Allen led all players with 10 first half points.
The second half started much like the first as the two teams went up and down the court trading baskets. With the game tied at 35-35, Towson used an 18-10 run to take a 53-45 lead in the game with 1:37 to play. The run was capped by three-pointers from senior forward
Camille Alberson and freshman guard
Breonn Hughey. Junior guard
Dominique Johnson hit a pair of three-pointers during that pivotal scoring stretch for the Tigers. Five straight points from the Cougars made it a three-point game, 53-50 with 33 seconds to play. Hughey and Hines-Allen combined to go 3-for-4 from the foul line in the final 30 seconds to put the Tigers up 56-50. A late basket by the Cougars made the final score, 56-52.
