Elon Uses Strong Closing Run to Defeat the Tigers

ELON, N.C. – Elon University closed the game on a 19-3 run to secure a 58-43 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Junior guard Dominique Johnson had 11 points and six assists to lead the Tigers on the afternoon.

A lay-up from Sam Coffer at 17:05 gave Elon an 8-5 lead. A 5-0 run by the Tigers, highlighted by a three-pointer from freshman guard Breonn Hughey gave Towson a 12-10 lead with 13:07 to go in the half. Elon (11-6, 4-2 CAA) scored 11 of the next 13 points in the game and took a 21-14 advantage with 7:31 left in the half. Shay Burnett and Essence Baucom each had four points during that run. Johnson scored six of the game's next eight points which helped Towson cut its deficit to two, 22-20 with 4:48 left in the stanza. The Phoenix used a three-pointer to push its lead back to five, however a bucket from Hughey and a three-pointer from freshman guard Shanaea Butler tied the game at 25-25 with 1:44 showing on the clock. Elon's Malaya Johnson hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left which sent Elon into the half with a 27-25 lead.

Elon shot 40% in the first half to Towson's 37%. The Phoenix held an 18-14 edge in the rebounding battle. Johnson led the Tigers with six points and four assists in the first 20 minutes of action while Burnett led the Phoenix with eight points.

Three foul shots from redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen allowed the Tigers to cut the lead to one, 29-28 with 16:49 to play in the game. A three-pointer from Zora Stephenson pushed the Phoenix lead back to six, 34-28 with 15:59 to play. The two teams traded baskets before a triple from Hughey cut the Elon lead to one, 38-37 with 9:33 to play. A three-point play from Hines-Allen at 9:06 gave Towson a 40-39 lead. Jennifer Rhodes hit a jumper at 8:46 that kick started the 19-3 run by the Phoenix to close out the game. Stephenson scored 10 of her game-high 16 points during that stretch. Johnson had a three-pointer for the only Tiger (7-11, 3-3 CAA) points in the final nine minutes of play.

Elon shot 34.4% in the second half and 36.8% for the game. Towson shot 20% in the second stanza and 28.1% for the game. Elon held a 48-34 advantage in the rebounding battle.

Hines-Allen had 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Tigers. Johnson was the other Tiger in double figures with 11 points and six assists. Hughey finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists while senior guard Ciara Webb contributed seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Stephenson was one of three Elon players in double figures with 16 points. Baucom finished with 13 points and six rebounds while Burnett had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Towson is back in action when it hosts Northeastern on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. in SECU Arena.
