TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University gymnastics team will travel to William & Mary on Saturday for a dual meet that begins at 4 p.m. The meet, held in Kaplan Arena, will serve as William & Mary's Pink Meet and promote cancer awareness.
Â
"We are looking forward to our competition this weekend at William & Mary as we are looking to build on our successful opening score last weekend," Head Coach
Vicki Chliszczyk said. "Although we had a great first meet, we didn't meet all of the goals we made as a team for ourselves. We are looking to this meet to redeem ourselves in that area. Â I'm looking for the team to build on the confidence they gained last weekend while continuing to focus on the little things that will make a big difference at the end of the night."
The Tigers (1-1) scored 193.325 to open their 2015 season last weekend at Missouri. Towson dropped a close decision to the host (193.900) but came away with the victory over Kent State (192.400). Â
Â
Towson saw an immediate impact from the newcomers on the team with 10 of its 24 routines coming from freshmen at Missouri.
Tyra McKellar led that group as she scored 9.7 or higher in three of the four events and recorded the highest Tiger score for both bars (9.775) and beam (9.775).
Â
Junior
Katie Sassa had an impressive start to her season as she posted a team-high score on floor (9.750) and the highest overall Towson score with a 9.850 on vault.
Â
Vault proved to be a strong event as well for senior
Nicolette Vignola who recorded a career-high 9.700 in the event.
Â
The Tigers will welcome William & Mary, along with West Chester and UNC, to SECU Arena on January 25 for their home opener at 4 p.m.
