Tigers Finish Second In Home-Opener On Sunday

TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University women's gymnastics team (3-3) finished in second-place in its home-opening quad-meet against the University of North Carolina, West Chester and William & Mary on Sunday evening. The University of North Carolina took the team title with 195.350 points. The Tigers scored 194.525 points to finish ahead of West Chester (188.025) and William & Mary (190.900).

"We came out and we proved a point and we did what we wanted to do," Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk said. "A third meet in a row with no counting falls is phenomenal. I don't think we've had three meets a season with no counting falls in my entire time here. So that is obviously fantastic. It's now just the little things in each event that we have to fix to get a little bit stronger."

The Tigers ended the meet on floor where they recorded a total of 48.675 points. The event was the Tigers' best event of the day as they outscored the visiting teams. Nicolette Vignola tied for first-place on floor, scoring a career-high 9.825 points. Samantha Lutz tied her career-high (9.775) as she finished second for the Tigers and fourth in the event. Lauren Cahalan tied a career-high on the floor with a 9.625, a score earned earlier this season against Missouri and Kent State.

Towson began the meet on vault where they would pick up 48.175 points. Vignola recorded her second career-high of the meet as she scored 9.725 on the vault. The score replaced her previous career-high of 9.700, earned earlier this season against Missouri and Kent State. Katie Sassa also scored a 9.725 in the event as she and Vignola led the Tiger effort on vault. Lutz recorded a career-high on vault with a 9.600, erasing her previous best of 9.525.

The Tigers moved onto the uneven parallel bars for their second rotation of the meet, scoring 48.900. Towson would record four career-highs in the event. Tyra McKellar finished third in the event and led the Tigers with a score of 9.850. The total was a career-high for McKellar, replacing the 9.775 that she earned against Missouri and Kent State. Vicki Vesecky followed behind with a 9.825, a career-high. She had previously held a career-high of 9.750 for the event, recorded at the New Hampshire Invitational in 2013. Lydia Thompson also recorded a career-high with a 9.775 that erased the 9.750 earned in 2013 against Rutgers. Noelle Harada grabbed a career-high as she also finished bars with a 9.775. Harada had previously scored a best of 9.650 against Missouri and Kent State.

Towson earned another career-high on beam and scored a team total of 48.775 points. Cahalan led the effort with a 9.825, the third-highest of the meet. The score was a career-high for Cahalan, erasing her 9.650 that she earned at William & Mary last weekend. Lauren Ross followed after with a 9.775 that landed her in fourth-place for the event. Gabriella Yarussi recorded a 9.675 in her collegiate debut on beam.

McKellar was the Tigers' only all-around competitor and finished in sixth-place with a 38.250.

Towson will make the trip to Texas Women's University on Sunday, Feb. 1 for a quad-meet featuring San Jose State and Centenary.
