Fast Start Leads Tigers to 71-49 Win over College of Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – A 22-10 run to start the game lifted the Towson University women's basketball team to a 71-49 win over the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Nine Tigers scored at least two points in the contest as Towson snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory.

"This was a great win and it was fun," said Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "Our young ladies had a great time. Our pressure and pushing the tempo today is something we need to adopt as our identity for the rest of the year. We were aggressive from the jump ball today."

The Tigers (9-13, 5-5 CAA) jumped out to an early 9-2 lead on a lay-up from redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen at 16:54. Back-to-back three-pointers from junior guard Dominique Johnson pushed the Towson lead to 19-10 with 10:10 left in the half. A triple from senior forward Camille Alberson capped the 22-10 run at 9:23 of the first. Breanna Bolden briefly halted the Towson run with a jumper at 9:08.

The Tigers responded with a 13-4 run which gave the home team a 35-16 advantage with 2:16 to go in the half. Freshman center Daijha Thomas led the Tigers with five points during that stretch. A pair of free throws from Johnson at 1:48 gave Towson a 37-18 lead. The Cougars (4-17, 2-8 CAA) scored the final five points of the half and Towson took a 37-23 lead into the locker room.

Towson shot 41.2% from the field in the first half and made four three-pointers. College of Charleston shot 31% in the first 20 minutes. The Tigers held a 26-18 advantage in the rebounding battle at half time. Johnson and Bolden each had 10 first half points.

The Tigers scored 13 of the first 17 points in the second half and extended their lead to 50-27 with 16:36 to play. Johnson, Alberson and freshman guard Breonn Hughey each drained a three-pointer for the Tigers during that scoring stretch. The Tigers and Cougars went back-and-forth, trading baskets on each of the floor. A pair of free throws from Erin Hall cut the Towson lead to 17, 52-35 with 11:56 to play. Eight straight points from the Tigers including a pair of triples from Johnson pushed the Towson lead to 25, 60-35 with 8:53 remaining in the game. Senior guard Markell Smith converted a three-point at 5:18 which gave the Tigers a 64-36 lead. That was Towson's largest lead of the game. The two teams continued to battle and traded baskets over the final five minutes. Redshirt freshman forward Jordyn Smith made a lay-up with seven seconds left, which made the final score 71-49.
