TOWSON, Md. – Elon University made 15 three-pointers en route to an 84-70 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action at SECU Arena. The Tigers had a balanced attack as four players scored in double figures but it was not enough to overcome the Phoenix hot night from behind the arc.
"I'm proud of our young ladies who continued to fight throughout the game tonight," said Towson Head Coach
Niki Reid Geckeler. "But we can't afford to get ourselves in a position where we have to come from behind and fight. I would have liked to see us come out and set the tone from the beginning but we didn't do that tonight."
With the game tied at 5-5 early in the first, the Phoenix (13-8, 6-4 CAA) used an 11-0 run to take a 16-5 lead with 14:15 to go in the half.
Jenifer Rhodes had five of the 11 points for Elon during that stretch. The Tigers scored seven of the next 10 points and cut the deficit to seven, 19-12 with 11:32 left in the first. Senior guard
Ciara Webb connected on a three-pointer during that run. Back-to-back triples from
Zora Stephenson pushed the Elon lead back to 13, 25-12 with 9:57 to go in the first. Towson used a 9-0 run to make it a 25-21 game with 6:49 showing on the clock. Senior forward
Camille Alberson had five of the Tigers' (9-14, 5-6 CAA) nine during that stretch. The two teams then traded baskets. A jumper by Rhodes at 5:32 kicked off a 10-7 run by the visitors to close out the half. Elon took a 40-30 lead at the break.
Elon shot 51.9% from the field in the first half and hit 9-of-13 three-pointers. Towson shot 30.3% from the field and made four three-pointers. Stephenson led all scorers with 12 at the half as she was a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc. Redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen and Alberson had eight points each for the Tigers.
Elon opened the second half on a 7-2 run and pushed its lead to 47-32 on a
Sam Coffer three-pointer at 18:01. Six straight points by the Tigers made it a 47-38 game. Hines-Allen had four of the Tigers' six during that stretch. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes. A triple from Webb at 11:46 pulled Towson to within nine, 58-49. Rhodes hit one-of-two from the foul line at 8:49 which gave Elon a 70-51 lead, it was the Phoenix largest of the game. The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court.
Malaya Johnson made a foul shot at 3:39 which gave Elon a 76-61 lead. Towson had nine of the next 12 points which made it a 79-70 game with 1:26 remaining on the clock. Junior guard
Dominique Johnson connected on a pair of three-pointers during that run. However, Coffer scored the final five points of the game to close out a 84-70 win for the Tigers.
Elon shot 66.7% from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 58.3%. The Phoenix hit six second half three pointers and finished the game with 15. Towson shot 46.9% in the second half and 38.5% from the field in the game. The Phoenix held a 36-28 advantage in the rebounding battle.
Webb led the Tigers with 15 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Hines-Allen contributed 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Alberson and Johnson had 12 points each while freshman guard
Breonn Hughey posted nine points and six assists.
Rhode led Elon with 19 points, four rebounds and four steals. Coffer and Stephenson had 18 points each.
Towson is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 8 when it travels to Northeastern for a 2 p.m. game.
