Hot Shooting Hofstra Defeats the Tigers

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra University opened up a 15-point halftime lead en route to a 62-48 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Tigers were led by junior guard Dominique Johnson, who had 13 points and four assists.

A lay-up from Anjie White at 14:09 allowed Hofstra to open the game on a 13-4 run. A jumper from freshman guard Breonn Hughey at 13:52 made it a 13-6 game. The Pride (17-9, 10-5 CAA) used a 14-4 run to extend its lead to 27-10 with 6:42 remaining in the half. Elo Edeferioka scored six of Hofstra's 14 during that stretch. The Tigers halted the Hofstra run with back-to-back buckets from Hughey and freshman center Daijha Thomas. That made it a 27-14 game with 4:58 to go in the half. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch and Hofstra took a 62-48 lead at the break.

Hofstra shot 51.9% from the field in the first half while holding the Tigers to a field goal percentage of 29.0%. The Pride held a 23-14 lead in the rebounding battle. White led all scorers with nine points while Hughey had six for the Tigers.

Towson (10-17, 6-9 CAA) opened the second half on an 8-0 run and cut the Hofstra lead to seven, 34-27 with 14:32 to play. Redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen had half of the Tigers' points during that run. The two teams battled on both ends of the court as a pair of free throws from Kelly Loftus pushed the lead back to 12 for Hofstra with 10:54 to go in the game. Towson scored six of the next eight points in the game which made it a 44-36 game with 7:57 to play. Freshman guard Shanea Butler had four of the Tigers' six during that stretch. However, Hofstra responded with a 9-3 run which pushed its lead back to 14, 53-39 with 5:09 to play. The Hofstra lead fluctuated between 14 and 21 points over the final five minutes as the Pride claimed the 62-48 victory.

Hofstra shot 40.7% from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 46.3%. Towson shot 48% in the second stanza and 37.5% for the game. The Pride won the rebounding battle 38-32.

Johnson led the Tigers in scoring with 13 and added two steals to go along with her four assists. Hines-Allen contributed 11 points and eight rebounds while Hughey had nine points.

White led Hofstra with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Towson is back in action when it returns home to host UNC Wilmington on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. It will be the final home game for the Tigers this season and they will honor their six seniors before the game.
